Funeral for Forest Fri Jul 19 2022
This project is about making a funeral for a specific forest that burned in the South of France, taking away some memory. Forests are burning around us, and it will keep burning more. With it, stories, memories, knowledge, are disappearing, turning into smoke.
This forest, in the south of France, is particular to me. I have my grandparent’s house there, lost in the mountains. Parts of this forest already burned in the past and are very likely to burn in the future. What can I tell about it to the future generations ? What does it feel like ? It will grow again, reborn, but it will not be the same one.
Facing these kilns, we’re facing our relation to death, the fear of disappearing, of oblivion, the fear of not being eternal, of losing our dwelling, our memories.
Insects eat the wood, memories and the brain grow in the same pattern that fire burns forest, spreading around. In this same pattern, I’m fixing the memories I have, the feeling I have toward this nature, materialized through textile, colors and textures.
The pattern of it draws itself into scars, holes, ashes, part of humanity is disappearing.
